平面を削りだす Filing the flat face

一見、何の変哲もない平面を作り出す作業が、実は一番難しい。私は、彫刻に機械を使わない主義なので、地道に、やすりだけで、この平らな面を削りだしていく。

In fact, it is the most difficult to make a simple flat face. My policy is not to use any machine for sculpting, so I'm filing this flat face only with files.

輪郭に迫る The outline appears.

だんだん顔らしくなってきた。この大理石は、先日完成した作品の大理石とはまったく異なる。純白で、目が詰まっていて、彫りにくいが、細かい細工が可能だ。彫刻家の最大の報酬は、こうして彫ること（自体）だとつくづく感じる。

Gradually This marble is different from the marble which I used for the previous work. This marble is pure white and has dense crystals, so it is not easy to sculpt, but it is possible to sculpt in detail. I'm fully convinced that the biggest reward for sculptors is to sculpt itself like this.

再びトシェのレリーフ Restarting of Tose's relief

6月の展覧会の作品が片付いたので、マケドニアに送るトシェ・プロエスキのレリーフに再び取り掛かった。こちらは6月中に完成させたい。

I finished the work for the exhibition in June, so I started sculpting Tose's relief for Macedonia. I want to finish this work in June.

只今梱包中・・・ Now packing...

御影石の台座（１５０ｋｇ）と大理石の像（１００ｋｇ）を木製のパレットに載せて、梱包するところ。

Now I'm packing the pedestal in granite, 150kg, and the statue in marble, 100kg, on the pallet in wood.

完成！ I finished!

ついに完成！２ヶ月弱で彫り上げたのは自己最速。マケドニアの４年は何だったのか・・・。というより、あの４年のお蔭です・・・。明日の朝もう一度チェックして、問題なければ梱包します。

Finally I finished this work! It is the fastest for me that I finished sculpting less than 2 months. What had I done in Macedonia for 4 years? Or rather, I owe this to those 4 years. Tomorrow moning I will check it again. If no problem, I will pack it.

眠り Sleeping

こちらから見ると、穏やかに眠っているように見える。後二日で磨き上げる。

From this angle, she looks like sleeping calmly. More two days I will finish polishing.

昼寝 Siesta

粗めのサンドペーパー掛けが終わった。ノミ跡もほぼ消すことが出来た。明日からは、より目の細かいサンドペーパーで仕上げていく。こうして見ると、まるで昼寝をしているかのようだ。

I finished sandpapering roughly and could almost erase traces of chisels. From tomorrow I will sandpaper more finely. She looks like taking a siesta.

かわいい来訪者 A cute visitor

工場に思わぬ来訪者。茨城の田舎ならではの光景。

An expected visitor came to the factory. It is a scene only in the country of Ibaraki.

おにぎり A rice ball

余ったご飯をおにぎりにして、休憩時間に食べたとき、あまりのおいしさと懐かしさに感動。マケドニアでカツ丼を初めて食べたときのことを思い出す。何気ないことの中に幸せがある。もう夏の暑さだ。

I was so touched by eating a rice ball which I made by the rest of rice. I remember when I ate "katsu don" for the first time in Macedonia. There is a happy in the daily life. It was so hot like summer.

台座 Pedestal

一日掛かりで台座の準備。磨いて、穴を開けるだけだが、これが簡単なようで・・・。

All the day I prepared the pedestal. It seems easy to polish and make a hole, but...

グレーの血管 Gray bood vessels

サンドペーパーをかけたことで、背中に浮かび上がったグレーの縞が血管のように見える。

Gray lines emerging on the back by sandpapering look like blood vessels.

やすり掛け Filing

全体にやすりと砥石を粗めに掛けたところ。これからの一週間で全作業を終えなければならない。

I filed rougly the whole marble by files and whetstones. I must finish this work whithin one week.

ガラスの可能性 Potential of glass

ガラス造形作家の奥野美果さんの展覧会のお邪魔した。ガラスの可能性に触れたひと時。

この大理石を初めて見たとき、この形が眠っていた。君は何を想っているの？私の手にすべてを委ねて・・・

When I saw this marble for the first time, I recognized this figure lying. What do you think, leaving your fate to me?

仕上げをし始める I started to finish.

立てたままの姿勢で、全体的な調整を始めた。やはり倒したままの作業では、狂いが出てしまう。

I started to sculpt this work as a whole in standing position. If sculpting only in lying position, mistakes may happen.

立たせてみました・・・ Standing position...

一通り彫り終えたので、全体像を確かめるために立たせてみました。

I finished to sculpt the main parts, so I made her standing to see the whole figure .

やっと峠を越す I've got over all the main parts.

ようやく髪を含めて、一通り彫り終わった。これから細部の調整と磨きに移行する。

Finally I finished sculpting the main parts, including the hair. From now, I will start adjusting details and polishing.

ついこの間まで石の塊だったのに・・・。中からこんな姿が出てくるとやはり感動的だ。

Until quite recently, it was just a block of marble... It is moving that such a figure appears from it.

スピードアップ！ Speed up!

ここまで来ると、俄然制作の速度が上がる。完成が間近いこともある。

Suddenly a pace of sculpting became speedy, because the work has now been nearly finished.

顔は一段落・・・ The first stage of the face is done...

顔は一段落した。明日からは、髪を仕上げていく。

I have finshed the first stage of the face. From tomorrow, I will finish the hair.

簡単なようで・・・ It looks easy, but...

ほぼ一日がかりで、鼻の穴を彫っていった。たった、これだけの作業に一日がかり？と思われるかもしれない。しかし実は、この鼻の穴の位置を正確に割り出すために、周りから少しずつ、鼻の穴の位置を特定していく。このような部分は一度作ってしまうと、修正ができないので、慎重になるのである。

Alomost all the day I spent for sculpting the hole of the nose. You may think, why did I spent one day for such a easy job? But, in fact, to figure out the correct position of the hole of the nose, it needs to specify the position of it, little by little, curving surroundings. Like this part, once I make it, I can't modify it any more. So, I did very carefully.

唇 Lips

唇の位置がやっと決まった。 明日は、鼻の穴！

Finally the lips were postioned correctly. Tomorrow I will make a hole of the nose!

削られた砥石 Curved whetstone

入り組んだところを磨くために、砥石もそれに合わせて削っていく。

To polish complicated places, it needs to curve whetstones fit for them.

顔 Face

顔を彫るのもすっかり慣れてきた。数はこなすものだ。ゴールデンウィーク中に、顔を仕上げたい。

I became skilled in sculpting the face. We should experience sculpting in quantity. I want to finish the face during Golden Week.

追悼 アイルトン・セナ Mourning Ayrton Senna

今日、５月１日、アイルトン・セナの１４周忌を迎えた。世界中で多くのファンが、今もなお彼の死を惜しんでいる。サーキットの向こうを見つめるその先に、何か永遠なるものを見つめていたようなその眼差しに惹かれ、セナを題材に作品を作ってきた。そして、これからも・・・。セナよ永遠なれ。

Today 1st.May is the 14th anniversary of Ayrton Senna's death. A lot of fans all over the world are mourning his death still now. I have been making works of Ayrton as a motif, because his eyes which were gazing on something forever beyond the circuit fascinate me. And, from now on... Senna, FOREVER!
