Traces of chisel （ノミの跡）

The next question I was asked many times is, about obliques. Like something cut, how and why they were made? They include my deep message. For ordinary people they mean nothing, but for stone sculptors they mean something by themselves. To make such obliques it needs a technique of chisel by hand work more than a certain level. At the same time it needs a sharp chisel. This is my message to modern stone sculptors who depend on machines.

次に質問が多かったのは、斜めの線について。何か切った後のような、斜めの線はどうしてか？というものだ。ここには深いメッセージがある。なぜなら、一般の人が見ても、何の意味もなさないが、同じ石彫家が見れば、自ずからその意味がわかるだろう。石にこのような線が出来るためには、ある一定レベル以上の手ノミの技術が必要であると同時に、余程切れ味のいいノミを使っていなければ不可能な仕事である。機械に頼りがちな現代の石彫家に対する私からの問いかけなのである。
