Wounded all over (傷だらけ)

She looks so painful, because polished so much. The reason why Venus of Milo doesn't look so painful, in spite of almost same damage, is that she had been buried in earth for a long time and lost the polished surface, then she was balanced between texture and damage.

It is rare that plumpnesss of women is expressed by marble like this work. We see how deep the author's observation and affection on the the motif were.

Boundary (境界線)

Venus of Milo is composed of the two parts, upper one and lower one. We can see its boundary on her cloth wrapped around the hip. Now we can see, but it is so hidden well that many people don't know about this. Nike of Samothrace and Venus of Milo are the best sculptures of the Louvre Museum.

We can see steel frames of reinforcement for wings. It is amazing that in those days, without such a steel frame, marble wings were sculpted and kept by themselves.

118 broken pieces (118

When the Nike was discovered on the island of Samothrace, it was just a torso and 108 broken pieces of marble. As a result that they were combined one by one and restored, the present statue emerged.

But,not small...

Close to the marble, the breasts don't look small. But, if her breasts were smaller than what they were, the whole balance of figure would not so good.

So big breasts?

Sometimes people point out her breasts so big, but from a distance, it looks natural as one of parts of the whole figure.

Under knees (膝から下)

It was one of elaborate parts. It was difficult to make legs, half side of them buried in the marble. Because, if I sculpted too much, then effects of half buried would become useless.

The leg line (足の線)

It was diffuicult to make the leg line from the thigh to the shin through the kneecap. I had a hard time making them.

At last the finish

I decided positions of arms and started polishing this marble at last. After shaving grindstones fit for curves, I polished this marble by my hands with them more than ten hours every day. When I became aware of my nails, half of them rubbed off.
